600 Boeing 737’s need Emergency inspection worldwide

Emergency inspections of 600 Boeing 737 planes are being conducted worldwide following concerns a faulty mechanism could render the aircraft uncontrollable. Worldwide airlines have been affected by an “emergency airworthiness directive” issued by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regarding the issue, but insist passengers won’t be affected by the checks.
The order was issued following an incident on March 2 when a Ryanair 737-800 en route from the Netherlands to Madrid experienced severe vibrations and had to make an unscheduled landing in Belgium.
Extensive damage to the left elevator, a movable flap on the horizontal tail that controls the pitch of the airplane, was found.
The FAA is now concerned the “unsafe condition” is “likely to exist or develop on other planes of the same type design”, the airworthiness directive stated.
“Severe vibration in this attach point is suspected of allowing rapid wear of the joint, and resulted in failure of the attach lugs,” Ali Bahrami, Manager of Transport Airplane Directorate, Aircraft Certification Service, said in the order.
“This condition, if not corrected, could result in a loss of aircraft control and structural integrity.”
Boeing spokeswoman Sandy Angers said the company supports the FAA’s order and remains committed to the safety of its aircraft.
“The interim measures serve to ensure that safety continues at the highest levels while we work diligently to determine a permanent resolution for this issue,” Ms Angers said.
The directive affects approximately 600 Next-Generation 737s, Ms Angers said.
The order applies to Boeing 737-600, 700, 700C, 800, 900 and 900ER series planes.
The planes must be inspected within 12 to 30 days.

Second Boeing 787 Dreamliner Completes First Flight

EVERETT, Wash., Dec. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — The second Boeing (NYSE: BA) 787 Dreamliner, ZA002, completed its first flight today. The all-new airplane, which features the livery of the Dreamliner’s launch customer, ANA (All Nippon Airways) of Japan, took off from Paine Field in Everett, completed a two-hour flight and landed at Boeing Field in Seattle. “We are delighted that the second Dreamliner is in the livery of our launch customer, ANA,” said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. “We are honored by the airline’s support and look forward to delivering ANA the first production airplane next year.”
Captain Randy Neville was at the controls for the flight, with Chief Pilot Mike Carriker operating as co-pilot. Neville and Carriker took the airplane to an altitude of 13,000 feet (3,962 m) and an airspeed of 200 knots, or about 230 miles (370 km) per hour. The airplane took off at 9:09 a.m. PST and landed at 11:10 a.m. PST.
This is the second of six 787s being used in the airplane’s flight-test program. Each of the airplanes will be used for a specific set of tests, with this airplane focusing on systems performance. Like its predecessor, ZA001, the airplane is powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.
“We would like to convey our sincere congratulations to the Boeing team for its achievement of this milestone, and we look forward to the delivery into our fleet next year,” said Shinichiro Ito, president and CEO of ANA.

Delayed 747-8 Set For Pre-Flight Shake Tests

Despite earlier this week announcing a delay to first flight of the 747-8 into early 2010, Boeing is pressing ahead with preparations for the start of the flight campaign and expects to conduct key ground vibration tests on RC501, the first 747-8, on Sunday Oct 11.
The vibration test involves shaking the entire airframe and is used to determine if the structure is susceptible to any unsuspected aeroelastic characteristics. The evaluation supports the run-up to flight test by assisting in flutter test planning. It is also used to detect structural flaws and troubleshoot flight control dynamic problems. GVT is therefore a fundamental building block toward clearance for first flight, and is expected to be particularly significant on the 747-8 with its stretched proportions and larger GEnx-2B turbofans.
The test comes after engineers last week checked the cable runs to the flight control surfaces and discovered some areas where they needed to be tightened. This work is also set to take place next week, after completion of the GVT.
Boeing says the delay to first flight from a target date in early December to a more likely date in January cropped up because the "build-up of tolerances between structure designed with older tools and the new design tools has caused fit-up issues that have been discovered and are being resolved in the final assembly process." The 'fit-up' issues are thought to have concerned areas such as the doors for the drop-down ram air turbine, an emergency hydraulic power system not used previously on the 747, as well as the Kreuger leading edge flaps on the new wing.

Boeing Reports 20 787, 737 Cancellations

Boeing has reduced its 737 and 787 order book by 10 aircraft each, bringing total order reductions across all airplane models to 111 as of Oct. 6 and total net orders to 70.

The 787 reduction lowers that type's total order book to 840. The 10 losses are the result of a merger last year by First Choice and TUI, two UK leisure travel specialists, to become Thomson Airways. First Choice held 12 787 orders; TUI had 11. Thomson will keep 13 firm orders plus 13 first rights. They had announced their intention to rationalize their 787 fleets on Sept. 29.
First Choice was the inaugural UK customer for the 787 and based its campaign on the long-range jet, which it expected to receive this year. So its entire travel campaign was thrown off by the delays. On its 787 program, Boeing has taken 83 cancellations this year, plus one last year.
The 737 cancellation is by a single customer that Boeing is not identifying. It is the 16th 737 dropped this year.
But while Boeing lost those 10 orders it added 11 more, though it is not identifying who bought them. As a result, the 737 now has 128 net orders for the year.
This activity is the first Boeing has recorded in a month and brings the year's totals to 181 gross orders, 111 cancellations and 70 net orders.
